Awesome small eatery place! Few places gives great service, affordable and delicious food.
They give complimentary soup and sometimes dessert. Love their roast duck and meat varieties.
I've been coming here since 7 years, totally recommend this place. -

A old school hole in the wall. Makes pretty good Cantonese dishes.
At lunchtime you can stuff yourself silly with the lunch specials for only $5-7. Lots of homey, old-fashioned comfort dishes like beef with tomato over rice, and fish filet with bitter melon. Wow, they even have squid with sour cabbage over rice. I haven't had that since I was a little kid. One of the ultimate comfort foods is congee $5. They have that here too. Even with frog legs for $7.
An all-time favorite is getting roasted meats over rice. The roast duck is pretty good, but I find the soy sauce chicken a bit dry. They give you a very generous portion of meat with a side of veggies. All for under $7.
Two more old home-style dishes are Steamed minced pork with salted fish, also Steamed tri-egg custard with minced pork. Very few places make these dishes.
There is complimentary soup before the meal.
The main language spoken here Cantonese but they also speak some English.
Final note: It's not the best Cantonese food but its quick and decent enough to be good! -

Pros - great food! roasted pork, chicken noodle soup, beef & broccoli are sooo good, you'll want seconds.
Cons - no delivery, eat in or take out. totally worth it, though. -

Golden Z is a smallish neighborhood restaurant specializing in Cantonese meats and noodles. We generally choose Golden Z over Season Restaurant across the street when we want to avoid weekend dim sum crowds. The portions here are tasty, large, and the prices reasonable.
Food: OK (3.5 of 5). Very Good, actually, but very salty. Most of the food that we've had at Golden Z is well-executed but the restaurant seems to use salt a little too liberally to both enhance and ameliorate different flavors. For example, you'll notice the natural bitterness in bitter melon and in mustard greens less at Golden Z than at other places, because of the salt. The latter dish does have ginger to further nuance the taste of the mustard greens.
Service and Atmosphere: OK (3 of 5). Service is friendly and prompt. Tea is complimentary. Complimentary daily soup (lai tong; 例湯) during lunch -- a pork-bone based soup that is flavorful, though noticeably salty. There is one small unisex bathroom that is adequately clean but could be better maintained.
Value: Very Good (4 of 5).
Overall: Good (3.5 of 5). -

I would like to thank Jonathan T. for introducing me to this place. I don't think I've ever been out in this neighborhood in my life so the odds of my being here regularly are incredibly slim. But after a few beers at Coney Island brewery we were both starving and I was under a very limited budget. Insert - "I know a place that serves Chinese food for like $5".
Really it's Cantonese Chinese and I rarely have tried that or legit hole in the wall mom and pop old school chinese places. But he was right. You can get a full meal here for $5.50. Oddly most of their americanized dishes are twice as expensive. I thought about noodles and those were like $8-10. Egg rolls - like $5 for two of them. Dumplings - higher than normal (you get the picture). But if you order any of their delicious meats and treats over white rice - $5.50-6.50.
They first bring out a bowl of some kind of fragrant broth with chinese cabbage I think and complimentary salted peanuts and a pot of tea. If my $5.50 meal starts off with free food, this has already become a huge winner for me. I went with shrimp and some kind of egg sauce and I think my friend got beef intestines with peppers? I tried it. It wasn't actually too bad. It just tasted like fatty beef. The shrimp and egg sauce was a little too runny for me and bland but they give a copious amount of food for the value and I went home with leftovers. So really my meal was $2.75, hotdog. The desert they also gave us in the end was a really nice touch. However, I personally thought it was disgusting. It tasted like beans and tapioca and fructose corn syrup and I was having none of that. But I totally appreciated the gesture from the kind restaurant people.
